7 Things A Southern Kid Knows By Heart

Growing up, there are a lot of dos and don'ts you hear from your parents, siblings, grand parents, aunts, uncles, etc. Particularly as a kid in the South, there are just things you know don't fly.

1. If your Mama says lets go, it's time to go. If she's walking out the door, you better be grabbing your shoes and running out after her unless you want to be left behind. She'll have no problem going out to eat without you, so it's more your problem than hers.

2. If you fix yourself a glass of tea and put the pitcher back in the refrigerator empty, you're in for it. Go ahead and start brewing a new pitcher when you pour yourself a glass to avoid the trouble later. Nothing goes right when there's no sweet tea in the house.

3. When you wake up on a Saturday morning to blaring country music (whether you like it or not) it's time to get up and start cleaning. If you don't, you're just risking the fact that your Mama may walk in with the vacuum on high.

4. Whether you're out in public or behind closed doors, you better be using your manners. Always say "Yes Ma'am/Sir" and "No Ma'am/Sir" to your elders. Always say please when asking a question, and never forget to use your inside voice. Expect an evil glare if you don't.

5. Finish your plate. And expect to be seated at the dinner table as long as it takes to do so. It may be an hour after dinner time, the kitchen may already be clean and everyone else has left the table, but you may not get up until you can finish all of the food that was on your plate. If it takes you an hour to do so, don't even think about asking for dessert afterwards.

6. If you get told to go outside and play until it's dark, you better go and play outside until it's dark. Don't even think about coming to the door every 5 minutes asking if you can come inside yet. Don't have toys outside? Pick up a stick and play pretend.

7. Your church clothes are your church clothes. You don't wear them to school, and as soon as you get home from church you are expected to immediately change into play clothes before doing anything else. Don't wait to see how mad your Mama gets when you get a stain on your Sunday's best.

It's best to just abide by these rules so you don't have to face the consequences. Breaking them once or twice will just guarantee that you never do them again.
